The Garden

I'm weeding the broccoli & cauliflower beds.  The tall leafy stuff behind me are potatoes.  They're doing great this year.  Corn in the foreground, peas to the left of them--out of the shot.  Yellow squash, zucchini & pumpkins in the rows way at the back.  Got green beans & lettuce going too, but they're out of the frame.  Been eating fresh lettuce everyday.  It's really good.  Going to plant a second crop tomorrow.  We made the final expansion this year--a permanent fence has been installed, so this is it.

Peas to the right on the stakes, lettuce to the left.  Getting a little sparse, cause we've been eating it.  The only thing that didn't grow this year was the carrots--that's what the empty rows are.  I also need to dig up those shaggy chives.  They're from last year & survived the winter, but they've about had it.  Can't wait till fall & potato picking time.  Last year's fresh potatoes were fabulous.  That's why I planted so many this year.

Well...that's it for now.  Just a short entry.  Been meaning to put up some photos of the garden.  Glad I finally got around to it.  Talk to you soon!  We're grouting tomorrow, so I'll put up some shots of the (nearly) finished downstairs bedroom.  It's REALLY nice.  Bye-bye!

Bessemer's Jail Break in Casper, WY

Noah & I headed down to Casper, WY last weekend for the Bessemer Vigilance Committee's annual shoot, the Bessemer Jail Break.  We had a fantastic time with one of the friendliest clubs we've ever visited.  I HIGHLY recommend this club.  You need to head on over to shoot with them if you get the chance.  We also ran into a couple of old shooting buddies from California:  Packin' Granny & Dusty Gray who used to shoot with us at Fish Canyon in Duarte.  They live up in Casper now.  Small world!!

This was a three-day shoot, but we weren't able to make it for the Friday side matches (I had to work).  We left Cody around 3:30 in the afternoon Friday & Noah drove the whole way there in a good, stiff wind.  Took us until 7:30 to get there, but we beat the heat.  We'd never been to Casper before--we went south through Thermopolis & Wind River Canyon to Shoshoni, then hung a left and drove through 100 miles of nothing but sagebrush and antelope to get to Casper.

We camped at the range in our motor home, which was really handy for us.  The cowboy range was really nice with a lot of great permanent structures and spacious, permanent sun shades at each bay.  We shot five stages on Saturday & I started out great.  My first three stages were clean and fast--I came in first overall on all three.  Then...what always happens to me happened again...I lost my focus & started screwing up.  Don't know why, but I just can't make it through a full match.  My last two stages on Saturday & all five of my stages on Sunday were a roller coaster ride:  some were good, some were bad & some were just plain ugly (the minor saftey I got for loading too many rounds in my rifle.  UGH!!)  But at least I looked good while I was shooting--style points are always important!!  I did win best-dressed cowgirl & that's always a kick for me.

Firing my pistol.

Running for my shotgun (see:  looking good!!)

Dropping those rounds into my double barrel.

Well...it all worked out in the end anyway.  I came in 4th overall, was first woman, and took my class (and I also won best-dressed cowgirl, too!)  Noah also came in first in his class.  Here we are with our trophies (and a little heat exhaustion--it was 100 degrees on Sunday--we're not used to that kind of weather anymore.  We were dyin'!!)

That's it for this time.  Until next time...

Buckskin & Noah Go On Vacation

OK...I've been putting off working on my blog since we got back last Friday.  I like doing my blog, but sometimes it takes a lot of time.  However, I decided to just sit myself down and DO IT!!

I was finally able to get a break from work, so Noah & I took off for about 10 days of R&R.  Our vacation plans went through several permutations during the weeks before departure, but they finally jelled, and now I'd like to share a bit of our trip will all of you, my loyal followers (all 2 of you!!)

On July 8th, we loaded up the old motor home and headed north, eventually stopping in Townsend, MT which is a little south of Helena.  We camped in a nice park on the lakes of huge Canyon Ferry Lake, though we didn't get any fishing in that first night.

In the morning we headed into Helena and parked the motor home in the Wal-Mart parking lot, unhooked the Jeep and headed to the Spokane Sapphire Mine up in the hills to do a little prospecting.

Here's Noah cleaning some rock.

Here I am cleaning some more rock.

And Eureaka!  I found something.

When we finished at the mine, we pushed a little further north to beat the heat.  We spent the night in the parking lot of the Great Falls, MT Wal-Mart.  It was a lovely spot right on a busy street with a wonderful oil refinery and railroad track right across the street, and did I mention we were right next to the International airport too?!!

After a refreshing night's sleep, we got up and drove the rest of the way to the shooting range outside of Simms, MT.  We arrived early Thursday morning for the 3-day shoot.  After setting up our campsite, we explored the Old West town the club had built on their range & talked to all the other shooters who were assembling for the Montana State Championships.

We shot side matches in 95 degree heat on Friday, but then it thankfully cooled down on Saturday when we shot 7 main match stages.  Sunday was even nicer for the last 5 stages of the shoot.  Awards were announced around 2 o'clock in the afternoon Sunday & I won 1st place in Ladies 49er (my first win in that category!) while Noah took first in Senior Deulist.

Receiving my 1st place trophy.

And Noah getting his 1st place award (eyes closed as usual!)

As soon as the match was over, we packed up & headed to St. Mary on the east side of Glacier National Park.  On the drive there, we got caught in the heaviest hail storm I've ever experienced.  We were pelted with large marble-sized hailstones for about 10 minutes just as we were entering the Blackfeet Indian Reservation.  The windshield of our motor home now has a large chip, but luckily, that was the only damage we sustained.

Once in St. Mary, we set up camp and I headed down to the showers for the first real shower I'd had in DAYS!  It was wonderful!  And the camp was wonderful too...there were Douglas firs everywhere, and the whole place smelled like Christmas.  The weather was also blessedly cool--though the wind blew quite heavily the whole time we were there.
On Monday we drove through Glacier and into Kalispell, MT.  Kalispell had a great hippie vibe that I really enjoyed.  We bought a lot of nice, fresh produce (something that is in short supply in Cody) & Noah got himself a delicious slice of home-made peach/huckleberry pie.  On the way back through the Park, I took a few shots of the scenery (the weather was a little gloomy) & got a pretty good picture of a mountain goat that wandered past the Jeep while we were stopped at a construction road block.

The next day, we went for a hike to Virginia & St. Mary Falls in the Park.  It was a lot of fun.  Here are a few shots of us and the waterfalls.

Buckskin at Virginia Falls (trying not to get blown over!)

We saw this doe on the way back from the Falls.  She was very brave.

The next day we started heading back south.  We spent the night in Three Forks, MT, then drove up to Virginia City to check it out.  We'd been told it was a really great spot to visit.  Turned out to be a semi-restored old gold town up in the hills.  I got a few shots of some of the more interesting buildings:

After spending a couple of hours browsing through Virginia City, we drove to West Yellowstone, MT.  On the way up, we passed by Earthquake Lake which was created in 1959 when a big 7.5 earthquake caused a landslide that dammed up the river.  There are lots of drowned trees sticking up out of the water:

Once in West Yellowstone, we got ourselves a spot to camp, then went into town for lunch and a little window shopping.  In the morning, we drove through Yellowstone.  It was a beautiful day & I took a couple of photos of Lake Yellowstone:

When we arrived home in Cody, we were in for a rude awakening:  it was 95 degrees & all the grass on the hills had turned brown in the short 10 days we'd been away.  Oh, well...that's how it goes.  I enjoyed the rest of my weekend, but it was back to work yesterday & I'm already up to here again with work.  Oh, how I miss the days of my summer-long vacations when I was a teacher!!

Well, that's all for now (I think that was enough for this time).  Noah & I are headed to Casper this weekend for the Bessemer Jailbreak.  I'll let you know how we did when we get back next week & I'll try to take a few pictures to share.  I haven't been very good about taking pictures at any of the shoots this summer.

Bye for now!!

Buckskin

Buckskin Lily Appears in the Famous Cody, WY 4th of July Stampede Parade

Buckskin models her last-minute, emergency ear plugs...guess what they're made out of????

Noah & I had to get up bright & early on Saturday, July 3rd to report to our 4th of July float.  Our shooting club, the Colter's Hell Vigilance Committee was sponsoring a float in the Cody, WY 4th of July Stampede Parade.  The parade runs on the 3rd and 4th every year.  We've been observers in the crowd for the past 5 years, so I decided it was time to get in on the action & be part of putting on a show for the tourists.

It was great fun.  We decorated our very un-PC float the night before (with some very pointed commentary on the wolf situation).  Then we all rendevoused the next morning at 7:30 to blow up balloons & drive the float over to the step-off area behind the BBHC (that's the Buffalo Bill Historical Center for all of you out-of-towners).  Things ran smoothly & we took our first run down Sheridan on Saturday morning.  It took us about 30 minutes to make it down the street waving and shooting blanks out of our pistols at every opportunity.  It was great to see the crowd react.  We had mostly cheers, clapping & thumbs up; though we did get a couple of jeers & an "F" you.  But positive comments definitely out-weighed the negatives.

Sunday, morning, the 4th was even more fun.  The crowd was much larger & we shot off more rounds than we had on the 3rd.  We also took a 2nd place ribbon in the Theme category, so that was a nice plus for the day.

All in all, it was great fun & I can't wait until next year to do it all over again.  NOTE:  Mini Tootsie Rolls do NOT make good emergency ear plugs.  They do block the noise, but getting them out of your ears afterwards is not so easy.  I think I still have little brown bits stuck in my ears!!

Sorry I've been very remiss in keeping up with my blog the past few months, but I've been working on a huge project for work (it's finally finished now--at least I hope it is!!).  So I should have a little more time to keep you all caught up on all of our latest adventures.  Noah & I are heading up to Montana for a little vacation tomorrow, so I'll tell you all about it when we get back around the 17th or so.  Bye for now & I'll be writing again soon!

Buckskin
